Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Serenity is dually licensed and offers Primary Mental Health, Primary Substance use, and Dual Diagnosis IOP programs. IOP is an effective option for teens and young adults who might be off-track and are experiencing life disruption due to mental health, substance use, or behavioral issues. This structured program helps you and your family tackle presenting problems by equipping you with foundational tools that facilitate change. Members who complete IOP will leave with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to succeed in achieving sustained recovery, independence and a healthy, balanced life.
Our Intensive outpatient program meets 3-4 times a week for a minimum of 2 hours a day and includes:
Individual, group, and family therapy
Parents group
Psychoeducation
Case management
Life-skills
Activity therapy
Educational/Vocational Support
Drug testing
Psychiatric Services
Medication Management
IOP typically lasts 6-12 weeks but the amount of time varies depending on the individual teen’s needs, goals, and progress.
Our IOP level of care often benefits teens and young adults who exhibit one or more of the following:
Struggling in school/work and experiencing a drop in performance
Losing interest in activities they once enjoyed
Experiencing frequent or persistent negative moods (i.e. anxiety, irritability, depression, or hopelessness)
Changes in sleeping and/or eating patterns
Trouble concentrating
Having suicidal or homicidal thoughts
Experiencing bullying
Difficulty establishing and maintaining social relationships
Family conflict
Experimentation or increase in substance use
Experiencing consequences due to substance use (family, social, educational/vocational or legal)
Being discharged from an inpatient or PHP and looking for additional support, OR
Currently in outpatient therapy but need more support
Outpatient
Our OP level of care is our least structured phase of treatment and can help maintain progress made in IOP. After successful completion of IOP clients can stepdown to OP for up to an additional 3 months. Outpatient can also be an effective first option for teens and young adults who might be off-track but have not experienced significant life disruption.
Outpatient services may include:
Individual Therapy
Group Therapy
Family Therapy
Physician Services
Psychiatric Services/Medication Management
Family Support
Family Therapy
Family therapy sessions and Parents Group are an integral part of our IOP and OP program. The addition of family therapy has a strong impact on successful treatment outcomes and sustained recovery from mental health and/or substance use issues. Family sessions are typically scheduled bi-weekly but may be increased or decreased according to your needs. Family therapy is highly effective in:
Developing and maintaining healthy boundaries
Fostering cohesion and communication among family members
Promoting problem solving through understanding of family patterns and dynamics
Building empathy and understanding.
Reducing family conflict
Family counseling aims to promote understanding and collaboration among family members in order to solve the problems of one or more individuals. It views the family as a system where one person’s behavior affects the entire family.
Rather than treating just the individual we help families identify unhealthy patterns and learn to support one another in order to create positive long lasting change.
Parents Group
Our Parents Group meets bi-weekly and provides parents education and support throughout the treatment process. Parents who attend will have the opportunity to share their experiences, increase their knowledge of mental health & substance use issues, participate in skill building exercises and gain support from fellow parents and staff.
Support and Resources
Information, resources, and meeting lists for 12 step & Mental health support groups of peers for parents and loved ones.
Psychiatric Services and Medication Management
For many people medications are an important component of care. In combination with our therapy services, our clinical team may suggest a medication plan to help improve successful treatment outcomes. Our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner works closely with the clinical team and assesses each members medical history and symptoms to determine which medication and dosage may be a helpful supplement to behavioral therapy. Serenity will also collaborate with providers for members who are already seeing a psychiatrist or receiving medication from an outside physician.
Evaluation:
Our clinical staff assess individual and family history via a comprehensive biopsychosocial. Parents are encouraged to attend part of the initial session in order to gain a better understanding of the program, provide a detailed family history and to participate in the collaborative treatment planning process. This assessment process aids in the identification your needs, specifics and severity of the problem(s) and the appropriate level of care. Our clinicians develop personalized treatment plans that include your goals and are co-created to fit your specific circumstances. If needed, we can refer to a higher level of care or help make connections to additional treatment providers.
Our Community:
At Serenity we believe in the power of connectedness and positive peer support. Our community provides a safe judgement-free zone for compassionate listening, open dialogue, mutual respect and support for each person’s journey. Feedback from a peer in group often can be more impactful than from a parent or therapist. Connectedness is powerful!
Therapy can be hard work and it can also be fun. One of our favorite group therapy activities is Feelings Charades. Group members draw a feeling word from a jar and act out clues for their peers followed by a discussion about a time they experienced that feeling. This allows group members to have a little bit of fun while becoming more comfortable and open to describing and sharing thoughts and emotions. We also encourage our clients to participate in recreational activities outside of treatment, and assist with planning group activities once a month.
